School Safety Conference Held In Orlando

(Orlando, FL) --A conference in Orlando could offer a preview of what safety measures schools will take in the future. The National Student Safety and Security Conference is wrapping up today. Vendors are showing off the latest in safety technology, like weapons detections systems. Sadly, the need for these systems may not be going away. School safety experts tell Spectrum News 13 they expect active school shootings will continue to increase every year.          

Suspect Arrested In Daytona Beach Shooting

(Daytona Beach, FL) -- A suspect is facing charges in connection to a Volusia County shooting that left a high school student injured. Daytona Beach police say an 18-year-old was shot in the leg while walking to school Wednesday morning near the Holly Hill Plaza. The victim is expected to make a full recovery. 23-year-old Willie B. Richardson has been arrested and charged with firing a gun from a vehicle, aggravated battery, and having a weapon as a convicted felon.

Volusia County Schools To Relocate 300 Teachers

(DeLand, FL) -- Nearly three-hundred teachers in Volusia County will start next school year in a new role. District leaders decided late last week to reassign the instructors to other classrooms or to the Human Resources Department for the 2024-25 academic year. The decision was made as federal COVID-19 funding for the district is set to end in the coming months. Officials are planning to reassess the school system's spending plan at the end of June.

Plans Moving Forward To Develop Melbourne Fairgrounds

(Melbourne, FL) --Plans are underway to bring a new attraction to Brevard County. The county commission and the Melbourne City Council agreed this week to develop the Melbourne Fairgrounds. It'll be located on 50 acres off New York Ave and would host events too big for Wickham Park. Melbourne's mayor says the fairgrounds could be ideal for events like the Brevard Renaissance Fair.

Teen To Be Charged As Adult In Deadly Crash

(Hialeah, FL) --A teenager blamed for a deadly crash in Miami-Dade County will be charged as an adult. Hialeah Police announced the arrest yesterday of 15-year-old Maykoll Santiesteban. He's facing charges that include two counts of vehicular manslaughter. If convicted, he could get 45 years in prison. Two women were killed and one was hurt in Tuesday's crash. Police tell 7News Santiesteban went for a joyride in his dad's car and was going over 50 miles over the speed limit at the time of the crash. A 71-year-old woman and her 39-year-old niece in the other car were killed. The 39-year-old's 65-year-old mother is in critical condition.   

Police: Former Athletic Director Used AI To Frame Principal

(Pikesville, MD) --A former high scool athletic director in Maryland is accused of using artificial intelligence to frame the school's principal. The Baltimore Banner reports Dazhon Darien is charged with disrupting school activities after police say he faked Pikesville High School Principle Eric Eiswert's voice and circulated an audio recording on social media. The audio clip made disparaging remarks about Black students, school staff and Pikesville's Jewish community. Eiswert was removed from the school as Baltimore County Schools and police launched an investigation into the recording.

Gator Scares Golfers

(New Orleans, LA) -- Play at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans came to a halt yesterday thanks to an unwelcome visitor on the golf course. An alligator crawled across the tee box on hole 17, surprising both spectators and players. Security allowed the alligator to pass through without incident. Play resumed and the tournament continued without further disruptions.
