Scott Calls For FDLE To Investigate Douglas High School Shooting (Tallahassee, FL) -- The governor is taking a step toward getting answers to the many questions about how law enforcement handled the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Rick Scott announced yesterday he has asked the FDLE to investigate how the Broward County Sheriff's Office handled the shooting and tips it got about Nikolas Cruz beforehand. Scott says the victims and their families deserve the full accountability an independent investigation can provide. One parent tells the "South Florida Sun Sentinel" he wants all levels of government investigated, from the school board to the FBI.
Douglas High School Students Attend Orientation (Parkland, FL) -- Students at Stoneman Douglas High School are beginning the process of finding what one parent calls the new normal. Orientation was held yesterday at the school, and it was the first time students were allowed back in the school since the shooting eleven days earlier. One junior tells the "Naples Daily News" it was nerve-wracking and emotional to return, but it helped to be together with others feeling the same grief. Classes will resume Wednesday on a reduced schedule.
Lawmakers Call For Action Against Sheriff Israel (Parkland, FL) -- Broward County's sheriff is being criticized for what one lawmaker calls unacceptable and unforgivable failures. House Speaker Richard Corcoran wrote a letter sent yesterday to Governor Rick Scott asking for Scott Israel to be suspended. The letter came after it was revealed that deputies received close to 20 calls about Nikolas Cruz over the past few years but took no action against him. Other lawmakers have asked for action to be taken against Israel, but he told CNN yesterday he will not resign and says his leadership has been amazing.
Reaction To Scott's School Safety Plan (Pensacola, FL) -- The governor's plan to improve school safety doesn't go far enough for some. Rick Scott announced Friday that he'd like to have one school resource officer for every one thousand students, but Pensacola resident Sami Kara wants two officers for every thousand students. Kara is from Algeria where he says schools have military members guarding students. A parent of a Washington High School student told 'Channel 3 News' there needs to be stronger focus on mental health.
Douglas High School Hockey Wins State Tournament (Estero, FL) -- While still dealing with tragedy, Parkland's Stoneman Douglas High School has reason to celebrate. The school's hockey team yesterday won the State Amateur Hockey of Florida tournament in Estero. What makes the win remarkable is the Eagles were the lowest seed in the tournament, and one player says after the shooting, they weren't sure they even wanted to play in the tournament. One senior tells NBC2 they played with passion and emotion, not for themselves, but for the 17 victims.
Cocoa Teen Murder Suspect Extradited To Brevard County (Cocoa, FL) -- A teenage murder suspect is a step closer to justice. Maryland 19-year-old Joshua Keravuori went before a judge yesterday morning in Brevard County after extradition from Georgia. He was arrested there for killing Ocala 65-year-old Terry Hilliard in a Cocoa hotel room this month. The judge denied his request for bail.
Shots Fired Outside Movie Theater (Altamonte Springs, FL) -- A cellphone sale is believed to have led to shots being fired outside a movie theater. Shots were fired around Saturday night outside the AMC theater near the Altamonte Springs Mall. Police say a couple met a man to buy his cellphone but then stole it while driving off with the man being dragged along with the car. That's when the man fired five shots, but the drivers have not been found.
Officer Kicked Off Force For Controversial Post (Peoria, IL) -- An Illinois police officer is no longer on the job and a controversial t-shirt is to blame. Peoria police officer Jeremy Layman got in hot water for several social media posts, including one that showed him wearing a t-shirt that read "Baby Daddy Removal Team." The backlash was strong and the city said late last week the 17-year veteran had been kicked off the force. Local activist Terry Burnside with the Peoria Communities Against Violence says Layman's behavior was totally unacceptable.
